Which tier are you in?
How to tell
Your tier depends on when you joined the pension system. For almost everyone, that's the day you were appointed to the FDNY.
- Appointed on or after July 1, 2009You're in Tier 3.
- Appointed between July 1, 1973 and June 30, 2009You're in Tier 2.
- Appointed before July 1, 1973You're in Tier 1. Your benefits are generally the same as Tier 2, but this site doesn't cover Tier 1's differences.
Were you in another New York public pension system before July 1, 2009, for example as an EMT in NYCERS, and transferred it to the Fire Pension Fund? Then you may be Tier 2 even if you were appointed later. Not sure? Call the Fire Pension Fund: 929-436-0099.
